What can go wrong? The War Between the States has taken everything from her. With few men and an abundance of starving widows, Richmond, Virginia, had lost its appeal for Caroline Lovelace.
In answer to a letter for a bride, she boards a train for the wilds of Colorado to Hickory Stick. Apparently, the twig town is named by miners who are digging for gold. No more starving sounds to good to pass up for Caroline. Soon, she will be the bride of Mr. Thomas J. Connors.
Or so she thought until the woman sitting across from her overhears Caroline mention the man's name. Seems Julia Brooks also has letters from the same Thomas J. Connors.
And think of their surprise when they meet Sarah Graham from New York City who is also on her way to Hickory Stick to meet the now infamous Thomas J. Connors.
With no money left, the three women continue on to Hickory Stick making a pact that none of them will marry Thomas J. Connors.
